We have many exciting news updates for you, as plans for the conference have been developing rapidly. We have new speaker updates to share with you, including the keynote speaker and several other dynamic presenters who have now been confirmed. Do not miss this unique opportunity to hear presentations by such an outstanding group of speakers. The program for the T-STAR Invasive Species Symposium, which will meet as one of the major concurrent sessions, has been finalized. Be sure to review the list of organizations that are sending speakers for this important symposium. Topics covered in this news update include: Abstract Deadline Reminder: May 16, 2008 Letter from the CFCS Chairman Major Speakers Now Confirmed Scholarship Deadline Extended T-STAR Invasive Species Symposium For these exciting CFCS news updates, read on: You have only two weeks left to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentations for CFCS. The deadline is necessary in order to prepare the contents of the program books. If you are considering attending this meeting to present your research, Extension, or teaching work, please send your abstracts to us before the May 16, 2008 deadline. LETTER FROM THE CFCS CHAIRMAN: Dr. Hector Santiago, Chairman of CFCS and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Puerto Rico, has drafted a new letter to CFCS members and to individuals interested in Caribbean agriculture. Compton Bourne, President of the Caribbean Development Bank is confirmed as keynote speaker. Other major presentations will be made by a wide range of scientists, politicians, regulatory agency leaders, and economic development officials. If you have any interest in Caribbean agricultural development, you will not want to miss this unique opportunity to hear these CFCS 2008 Meeting speakers: Former Florida governor and former United States Senator Bob Graham has agreed to address the CFCS meeting. Charles Bronson, the Florida Commissioner of Agriculture, will also speak at the meeting. Ambassador Irwin La Rocque, the Assistant Secretary General for Trade and Economic Integration, Caribbean Community (CARICOM), will make a presentation. Bruce Knight, the Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will also make a presentation. Arlington Chesney, Executive Director of the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), will speak, as will the mayor of Miami Beach, Florida. Chelston Brathwaite, Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), will address the meeting. Hector Santiago, Chairman of CFCS and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Puerto Rico, will make a presentation, as will Jimmy Cheek, the University of Florida’s Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources. David Sammons, the University of Florida/IFAS International Programs Director, will address the group, as well. Other exciting speakers are still being confirmed. As we work to complete the speakers’ program, we will keep you posted with new developments. SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE EXTENDED: Good news for students! The April 16, 2008 scholarship application deadline has been extended to May 16, 2008. Please pass the word to your students that there is still time to apply for a scholarship to help defray expenses for attending this meeting. Scholarships for students are available on a limited basis.
